to get back to training after this past weekend. Actually, my mind and heart were in it but the legs felt heavy. I had on taking off Monday only and had plans to cycle Tuesday night. It was not meant to be as a night with Fernando and Rafael wound up taking precedence. A few glasses of wine, a couple of beers, and a few shots later and my decision became one that I’d carry with me straight to the next morning.

Getting up Wednesday was no treat and I had to bail on swimming. I did wind up getting in a cycling session in the evening and rode to NJ doing River Road and the Alpine hill. I finally got some metrics on the hill: it’s 1.24 miles long and it took me 8:10 from starting/end points I chose. I’m the kind of person who needs data in order to gauge workouts and progress. I’m made fun of more than anyone I know for my nerdiness herein, but it doesn’t seem to have an effect as I continue to keep spreadsheets, measure heart rate, calculate pace and distance, and compare the times and telemetry data from runs and bike rides. Anyway, the next time I ride Alpine hill, my goal will be 8:09 or better!

I was surprised that the ride yesterday went as well as it did. Except for the beginning where I felt that I was going perhaps a bit too hard, based on the perceived expenditure of muscle strength, I rode fairly strong but kept it under race pace. On the big hill, I vowed to not fall victim to only riding in my easiest gear. Instead, I did a lot of work out of the saddle and in bigger gears which is not something I often do in races (mostly because few courses are super hilly). It might be worth it to incorporate more out of the saddle climbing into my training regimen and potentially use it on two particular climbs in the NYC Triathlon bike course.

Tonight, I went for a short run which is my standard 4 miler (actually 3.93 miles, but only I seem to know or care about the discrepancy!). There are some days when running feels like a piece of cake, almost as if I’m just gliding. Tonight, it was not that way. I started off at a reasonable pace, or so I thought, but wound up doing the first mile in 7:12. I got to the 102nd transverse in 12:38 (normally I’m there in 13:30 or so), and did the final mile in 7:10. Sure, it’s great to have such fast splits, but I had planned on doing an easy run, not a race pace run that, by the way, set my personal record for this 3.93 mile course. This has been a problem of mine for a while, slowing myself down during training. There are worse problems of course, but one of the keys to proper training is incorporating different distances, paces, terrain, etc. I’m doing most of it right but not with the pace. I haven’t been running with friends very much, but perhaps the key is to run with people slower with me. Problem is, most of my tri buddies are better runners than me!

Photos from the Columbia Triathlon were just
